Stairlift - What alternatives are there?

People with reduced mobility who have difficulty climbing stairs due to age or a particular illness, for example, have a wide range of possible solutions and products to choose from. Until now, the stairlift has been one of the most common solutions apart from expensive renovations or a move to a retirement or nursing home. In this article, we will take a closer look at why a stairlift is not always the best solution for you and what you need to consider when buying a stairlift.

What is a stairlift?

A stairlift is a device that transports you up and down between two or more floors, either indoors or outdoors. It consists of a rail specially designed for your staircase and a seating device. The lift moves relatively slowly along the stairs at an average speed of around 7 cm per second. Stair elevators can be used on both straight and curved stairs.

How much space does a stairlift need?

In comparison, stair elevators take up a lot of space and therefore cannot always be installed on narrow stairs. This would mean that they would restrict the width of the staircase for others. When purchasing a stairlift, there is therefore a lot to consider, especially on narrow stairs.

The rail system of a lift usually takes up around 18 cm plus the distance from the wall. In addition, the seat unit takes up around 40 cm when not in use. As the structural conditions of stairwells often do not allow enough space to park a lift and provide a safe escape route at the same time, it must be possible to park the seat unit both at the top and bottom of the stairs.

Example of the dimensions of a stairlift

  • Total height 98 cm
  • Seat height 44 cm
  • Total depth (from wall) 57 cm
  • Total depth (folded) 31 cm
  • Footrest width 31 cm
  • Total width 60.5 cm
  • Seat depth 60.5 cm

What is the average cost of a stairlift?

The cost of a stairlift is usually between 2,500 - 12,500 euros depending on the stairlift provider. The final price depends on whether you have a straight staircase or a curved staircase.

Although technical challenges and structural requirements are often reasons why a stairlift cannot be installed, there is another and equally important reason why alternatives should be considered.

The topic of daily living rehabilitation has become increasingly important in recent years. Everyday rehabilitation is about mastering everyday activities in your own home, as it is very clear that most people want to continue living in their own four walls.

Older people go for a walk

Keeping the body moving has a huge impact both physically and mentally. Among other things, physical activity contributes to the following:

  • Lower risk of type 2 diabetes
  • Lower risk of colon and breast cancer
  • Better memory and other cognitive functions
  • Greater opportunity to remain independent and look after yourself
  • Fewer falls and fractures

Exercise is ultimately the most important medicine for your own body and has been proven to help against dementia, cardiovascular disease and reduce the risk of stroke and heart attack. For this reason, we have developed the TOPRO Step rollator for stairs.

TOPRO Step stair rollator

TOPRO Step is a rollator for stairs that keeps you safe when climbing stairs.

TOPRO Step was developed by former NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) students and launched on the Norwegian market in 2015. The reason why we developed TOPRO Step was that many people have difficulty walking up and down the stairs without assistance. Reasons for this include diseases such as Parkinson's, stroke and MS.

A fall on the stairs can have serious consequences, such as hip fractures or fractures of the neck of the femur.

How do you motivate yourself to exercise more and protect yourself at the same time?

Since the European market launch of the TOPRO Step in 2015, over 1000 products have been installed in various European countries. TOPRO Step is certified and tested by the German TÜV and is approved for people weighing up to 120 kg. TOPRO Step can be installed on both straight and curved stairs.

What does a TOPRO Step cost?

As with seat lifts, the price of a TOPRO Step depends on various factors. As TOPRO Step is a module-based system, it does not have to be completely customized to your staircase.

  • the course of the stairs
  • the number of curves
  • the length of the required rail system
  • the desired equipment and
  • the conditions on site, such as wall material or differences in depth in the wall

are factors that influence the TOPRO Step price. The best way to find out the final price for your staircase is during a personal consultation with one of our product experts. Please contact us.
