Questions & answers about the TOPRO Step

Regardless of whether you or your relatives are dependent on an aid such as the TOPRO Step for age-related reasons or due to a need for care, it is important to contact your (care) insurance fund directly. It is therefore best to contact your care insurance provider to discuss the possibility of cost coverage or possible subsidies for the TOPRO Step. Please also ensure that you do this before installing the TOPRO Step.

There are two requirements that must be met before you can submit an application for cost coverage. The first and most important requirement is that you are a member of a statutory health insurance fund. Please note that these options are country-specific and individual.

The second requirement is that you or your relative must have an official care degree (formerly care level), which proves both the need for care and limited mobility. Since January 1, 2017, there have been five care levels, which are anchored in the Care Strengthening Act 2. These replace the previous three care levels. From care level 1, the care insurance fund provides a one-off subsidy of up to €4,000 per person for measures to improve the living environment. Please note that this applies only to Germany as of 2024.

The maximum grant is 16,000 euros for a household with several people in need of care. This grant can be used for a wide range of barrier-free and/or age-appropriate conversion measures.

As a rule, this is a one-off grant. If your state of health changes or deteriorates, further measures, such as an age-appropriate design of your bathroom, can be subsidized again with up to 4,000 euros. This applies only for Germany as of 2024.

If the insurance company approves your application, you will receive a positive decision and installation of the TOPRO Step can begin. Submit the original invoice(s) to the care insurance fund.

TOPRO Step is a module-based system and is customized on site. All parts are stock items and therefore the delivery time from order date to complete assembly is usually four weeks. In some cases longer delivery times may occur, in urgent cases faster delivery is also possible.

The current edition of TOPRO Step is only available for indoor use.

TOPRO Step is a purely mechanical aid and does not require a power connection.

The price varies depending on the type of staircase you have. Please send us pictures of your staircase tocontact@toprostep.com and we will be happy to provide you with a non-binding quote.

Of the several hundred installations we have made so far, there are many people with a wide variety of conditions who benefit from TOPRO Step every day. The youngest user is a 6-year-old boy with cerebral palsy and the oldest is a 95-year-old man who suffers from restricted mobility.

Typical users are people who find it difficult or frightening to climb stairs for various reasons. Some have experienced falling on flat surfaces or on the stairs and would like more support and safety when climbing stairs.

TOPRO Step is well suited for people who want to keep moving and stay active while traveling safely. TOPRO Step was developed to help users with MS (multiple sclerosis), CP, Parkinson's, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), stroke patients or people undergoing rehabilitation after an operation or injury.

In most cases, TOPRO Step can be installed. We recommend taking some pictures showing the entire staircase and the area at the top and bottom of the staircase.

In most cases, it is advisable to extend the rail system by 30-40 cm from the edge of the top step at the top of the stairs.

If there is a lack of space or if the wall ends prematurely, we recommend that you send us pictures so that we can give you quick feedback.

Yes, provided the stair width is at least 60 cm. It is very rare for stairs to be narrower than this and so far there has never been a staircase that was too narrow to fit TOPRO Step.

Yes, it is no problem to install the TOPRO Step rail system over the railing that has already been installed. However, we always recommend that the TOPRO Step railing replaces the old railing. The TOPRO Step handrails are made of stainless steel and are therefore suitable as handrails for all users of the stairs.

Yes, there are some children who use TOPRO Step in everyday life and benefit from it. Our youngest user is 6 years old. Click here to watch Peder's (6) first trial run with TOPRO Step. We recommend testing TOPRO Step beforehand in one of the public facilities where it is installed.

As with a walking aid or a normal handrail, the user should have a certain grip strength to be able to use TOPRO Step. If in doubt, you can try out TOPRO Step in one of the facilities where it has already been installed or contact our sales partner to arrange a free trial run.
Yes, the handle can be adjusted up or down according to your wishes. The height adjustment is carried out by certified fitters.
We often get feedback from our customers and users that it is much easier to push the handle up the stairs than they had imagined. The handle is made of aluminum and weighs only 1.3 kg - so it is not much heavier than pushing a rollator in front of you. When going downstairs, lift the handle 2-3 cm high so that you can push it in front of you. Stroke patients often prefer to do this with one hand.

Yes, the standard version of TOPRO STEP is a combination of grey tones and natural anodized aluminium. Please contact us if you would like to personalize TOPRO STEP. Longer delivery times must be taken into account in this case.

No, no planning permission is required to install the TOPRO Step. This applies both to installation in a private home and in a shared stairwell.

Our sales partners and their certified fitters carry out the installation. The installation itself usually takes 3-4 hours.

Only if the handle has to be parked in the course of the stairs. If the handle can be pushed out of the top or bottom of the staircase when not in use, the handrail should not be more than 10 cm from the wall.

TOPRO Step can be installed regardless of the width of the stairs, as the handle can be folded in either at the bottom or top of the stairs when not in use.

As the TOPRO Step railing protrudes less than 10 cm from the wall, it is not necessary to apply for planning permission before installation.

In shared stairwells, the user must ask the condominium owners' meeting or the landlord whether it is OK to install the ATOPRO Step, even if this means no restriction for the rest of the residents.

TOPRO Step has been tested and certified by TÜV NORD for users up to 120 kg.
