Espen, like many other men in their thirties, is the father of two children and lives a normal, albeit hectic, life.
On New Year's Eve 2015, however, something happened that would fundamentally change the lives of Espen, his wife and two children. Espen and his wife were spending New Year's Eve with a couple of friends in a vacation cabin when Espen began to feel and behave strangely. He had to vomit. Even then, his wife wondered whether he might have had a stroke, which eventually turned out to be the case. He had bleeding in his brain stem. At the time, nobody knew whether he would survive the night. So Espen's life changed from a very active lifestyle of regular cycling, golfing and playing with his two children (the youngest was just 11 months old) to a complete dependency. Suddenly he could no longer walk, talk or eat independently. He was in complete need of care and dependent on the help of his wife and nursing staff.
We celebrated our youngest's first birthday together with Espen at the hospital. We did it mainly just to have done it. Espen was completely tired and exhausted.

When Espen moved back home, he had to sleep in the living room. In the summer of 2016, the couple were certain that they would have to remodel the house and move the bedroom to the first floor.
