Stair climbing device – ultimate guide
Without good support, stairs can be scary and dangerous. In this article we will look at TOPRO Step, the stair climbing device, and show how it can give you or your loved ones back quality of life.
If sitting down and standing up are made difficult due to movement restrictions such as joint stiffness, the classic stairlift may not necessarily be the optimal solution for navigating the stairs in one’s own home.
Often, these restrictions lead to difficulties in bending the joints and therefore also in climbing stairs, and suddenly one is faced with a mountain of possibilities that also need to be overcome. Do I need a stair lift? Or is the stair railing enough?
Platform lift, standing lift, home lift, stair climber or stair climbing aid. The selection is large.
In the following, we will take a closer look at the standing lift and compare it with the classic stair lift.
Thanks to the standing lift, those affected do not have to bend their joints when walking up the stairs and can simply overcome the stairs while standing – this can be a great relief in everyday life!
So a simple standing lift is suitable for anyone who has difficulty bending their legs.
The standing lift is similar to the stair lift. The main difference is that, unlike the stair lift, the standing lift does not have a seat but rather a small platform for standing. Like stair lift models, there are also different versions available for standing lifts.
Additionally, a safety belt or safety bar can be supplied for extra support. A safety bar and armrests ensure safety.
The platform moves along the rail system, which transports it up and down. Since the standing lift does not have a seat, it takes up relatively little space and is therefore also very suitable for narrow staircases.
Both the standing lift and the classic stair lift are attached to a rail system that is mounted on the steps of the stairs. The lift then glides along this rail and is powered by an electric motor, usually. In case of a power outage, a rechargeable battery is used to ensure that the lift can still be used.
The use looks like this: You step onto the platform and fasten either the seat belt or fold down the safety bar in front of you for a good and secure grip. There are also armrests at hip height on both the left and right sides, which help to secure you.
In the next step, one operates the control lever or button, which is usually located on the side of the lift. If one wants to use the lift but it is located at the other end of the stairs, one can use a remote control to call the lift to oneself.
It is possible that one may feel unsure at the thought of going up and down standing, but the following safety precautions ensure that one is on the way.
Basically the same conditions apply as with a stairlift.
In the case of a lift, the ceiling height is crucial, because unlike a regular stair lift, it must be ensured here that one does not have to duck their head while being transported up and down while standing.
Specifically, this means that a ceiling height of at least 2.25 meters must be provided.
Similar to regular stairlifts, the same applies to the standing lift: a custom-made lift is much more expensive than a standardized model. In general, a standing lift is used when the conditions on site do not allow the use of a regular stairlift or the user is unable to sit.
This makes the standing lift relatively expensive, as the rail system on which it glides must be individually adapted. Depending on the size and local conditions, one can expect costs for a standing lift ranging from approximately 2,000 euros to 12,000 euros.

Easier everyday life with a stair climbing aid. Tommy Jørstad found the stairs a major obstacle to his daily life. His balance was poor and his knees were in danger of giving out. But with the bedroom and bathroom on the 2nd floor, the stairs have to be negotiated several times a day. “I was simply afraid to use the stairs,” Tommy Jørstad tells us in his living room. (This is a translation based on an article by Anne-Lise Aakervik, originally published in Ergoterapeuten 2nd edition 2017).
