What exactly is COPD?
COPD, a disease that is little known to the public, is nevertheless one of the most common lung diseases worldwide. But what exactly is COPD, also known as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease?
At the rehabilitation and nursing home Lamarktunet, the stair climbing aid has now been installed for a one-year trial period. Torstein Lien is 91 years old and has become somewhat unsteady on his feet. But now he has the opportunity to train climbing stairs independently.
Torstein was a postman for over 30 years and occasionally had to wear snowshoes to reach the mailboxes. But that was at a time when the mail had to arrive – no matter what. Now he lives in the Lamarktunet nursing home in Sortland.
Willingly, he offered himself for testing when the stair climbing aid was installed in the senior home and was to be presented to the public.
A brief introduction and a test run were enough to get Torstein used to using the stair climbing aid. He used the TOPRO Step stair climbing aid so effortlessly and only needed a little help and support. And to ensure that he gets his daily training quota, he went up and down three times right away.
The stair climbing aid is a good way to train on stairs daily and to overcome stairs – completely independently. Instead of taking an elevator, one can now safely walk up the stairs without having to fear falling.
“The stair climbing aid keeps one stable and is very easy to use,” explains Marit Brenna Hansen, occupational therapist at the Lamarktunet rehabilitation and senior center.
Halvor Wold, the co-founder and CEO of the company AssiTech AS, personally came to the Lamarktunet rehabilitation and nursing home to install the stair climbing aid.
He developed the stair climbing aid TOPRO Step together with three of his classmates at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) – the stair climbing aid is now produced in Trondheim.
The stair climbing aid TOPRO Step is sold and installed throughout Norway, but this is the first installation in Vesterålen and the Lofoten Islands.

“The idea and the development process began with the fact that I have a grandmother who needed help climbing stairs. That’s why I wanted to develop something that helps her help herself. I then developed this idea further together with a group of fellow students at the university,” Halvor Wold told the newspaper Bladet Vesterålen.
“Above all, stroke patients use the TOPRO Step stair climbing aid, but also people with muscle diseases or other conditions that make it difficult for them to climb stairs on their own. With a tool like this, one becomes more independent and at the same time safer on the go. It is so easy to use that anyone can learn it,” says Wold.
The stair climbing aid requires no electrical connections, no power is needed, as one’s own strength helps to go up and down the stairs.
One pushes the stair climbing aid in front of oneself while climbing stairs. In case of danger of falling, the device catches one or one can hold onto it until one can stand stably again. People of all ages use and benefit from the stair climbing aid – from a six-year-old boy to a man over 90 years old.

It’s good news for Torstein Lien. The TOPRO Step stair climbing aid will help him be more active in everyday life.
“Now I dare to go up the stairs without outside help, and that means I can train and stay in shape,” he says.
His occupational therapist is convinced that this device will encourage the residents of Lamarktunet to become more active.
They may need a little push to get started, but once they see that it is safe and they can do it themselves, it is not a problem.
