What is a stairlift?

A stairlift is a motorized lifting device that transports you between floors while you are seated. Unlike home lifts or stairclimbers, a stairlift transports you along the stairs on rails that are attached to the steps.

Stairlifts are generally divided into two categories: straight stairlifts and stairlifts for curved stairs, whereby the latter usually have to be specially adapted to your staircase (and are therefore more expensive).

Stairlifts move between floors at a speed of around 0.15 meters per second, which can mean that the journey between floors can take several minutes.

Stairlift prices

As with most products that need to be adapted to the environment, the price depends on the local conditions.

Curved stairlifts are generally between 100 - 200% more expensive than straight stairlifts, as they usually have to be specially made for your staircase.

Straight stairlifts - Prices

The typical price range for a straight stairlift is between 2,500 - 6,500 euros, including the statutory warranty period of 2 years.

Curved stairlifts - Prices

The typical price range for a curved stairlift is between 5,900 - 12,500 euros, including the statutory warranty period of 2 years.

Please note that these prices do not include the costs incurred after purchase. These can be significant as it is recommended that a stairlift is serviced every 6 to 12 months. As the typical warranty period is very short, you should allow a higher budget than indicated above for post-purchase repair and service costs.

Warranty and service

Stairlifts have a warranty period of 2 years. Note that stairlift dealers and manufacturers deliberately include very short warranty periods as standard, as they know that your stairlift is likely to require frequent maintenance.

According to the consumer advice center, annual maintenance and service costs amount to between 200-300 euros. In many cases, the actual cost of owning a stairlift therefore starts after the installation has been completed.

Before you decide to buy a particular stairlift, you should therefore ask about the price of the necessary maintenance after the short warranty period has expired and always obtain several quotes, as there are large price differences due to different technical solutions. However, the price of one and the same model can also vary considerably.

Print sales tactics

Research shows that around half of all stairlift customers experience pressure selling techniques through the agent.

Typical print sales techniques include:

  • Exert pressure to choose a more expensive stairlift model
  • Excessive number of sales calls
  • High initial sales price where the customer has to haggle down the price

In fact, some stairlift manufacturers have been known to store your contact details and contact you regularly for several years after receiving your contact details.

Stay active

One of the best things you can do to promote good health and increase your life expectancy is to stay active throughout your life. Scientific studies show that even short walks and climbing stairs in your home have a significant impact on your health. The study also shows that simple activities such as vacuuming, short walks and gardening are all that is needed to promote good health.

A study involving 36,000 people from Norway, Sweden, the UK and the USA shows that simply continuing to climb stairs at home has a profound impact on fall prevention. This is because people who continue to climb stairs and exercise their muscles in the process can maintain their balance and core muscles.
