How Tobias (39) climbs stairs despite neuropathy with the help of the TOPRO Step stair climber!

Tobias has been using the TOPRO Step stair aid since summer 2017 to be able to safely and independently use the very steep stairs in his home.

Tobias suffers from polyneuropathy.

Tobias suffers from kidney failure and therefore has to undergo dialysis three times a week for five hours each time. As a result, Tobias has developed polyneuropathy – a nerve disease of the peripheral nervous system. Common symptoms of polyneuropathy include sensory deficits in the legs.

Tobias injured his knee in a fall in the bathroom in December 2017 and therefore has significant difficulties with climbing stairs. Additionally, Tobias underwent knee surgery on January 16, 2018. Due to severe overweight as a teenager, his knee joints have worn out significantly.

Obesity is one of the main risk factors for early joint wear and tear!

In June 2017, the TOPRO Step stair aid was installed for him.

Tobias says:

“Due to dialysis, I have developed polyneuropathy. As a result, the nerves in the extremities are damaged and I no longer have the strength and confidence when walking, and our stairs are very steep. I have already fallen down them twice.

We then installed a second stair handrail, but it was not the right solution. I can rely on the TOPRO Step stair aid as I need to. Depending on what is currently bothering me, I can then go up and down the stairs accordingly.

I can’t rely on either knee, and at least the stair aid TOPRO Step is there that I can rely on.”

“In December 2017, I fell and suddenly had to go up and down the stairs with two broken knees. I can’t imagine doing that without the TOPRO Step stair aid.
I can’t rely on either knee, so at least the stair aid TOPRO Step is there that I can rely on. That is a great help.

In the hospital, where I had to practice climbing stairs, I only had one handrail. With the TOPRO Step stair aid, I would have felt safer while training.
In everyday life, I can go up and down and can leave the house whenever I want and don’t have to ask anyone for help.

I also recommend to everyone who comes to me, for example my neighbor, to use the TOPRO Step stair aid.
If someone asks me about walking aids, I always say that I have the stair assistance installed at home and that I think it’s great.”

I want to maintain as much mobility as possible.

“The health insurance was also quite cooperative. They covered the full costs for the TOPRO Step, and they seem to have understood what this is all about. I want to maintain as much mobility as possible.

After seeing the TOPRO Step stair aid at the Rehab trade fair, Rüdiger Schmitt Treppenlifte came here and measured the stairs. We then approached the health insurance company and inquired about cost coverage. The process did not take long.

The rehab was in mid-May and by the end of June we already had the TOPRO Step. The health insurance company quickly understood the purpose behind it. That I just don’t want to be driven up here, but want to maintain my mobility and go up by myself. The health insurance company reacted quite quickly and positively and approved the stair aid TOPRO Step.”
