Handrails

Handlauf
One of the most important measures for an accessible staircase is the handrail. This must be continuous regardless of the type of stairs and should not be interrupted even at landings. If possible, handrails should also continue horizontally at the beginning and end of the stairs, allowing for a safe entry and exit. The handrail should be securely graspable. For handrails, there are several things that must be considered.

Legal requirements

A handrail usually must be installed at a height of at least 80 centimeters vertically above the edge of the steps and must not exceed 115 centimeters in height.

Shape and diameter

The shape of the handrail is usually rounded – only oval or round handrails are allowed on public stairs. The diameter of a handrail should be between 3 and 4.5 centimeters.

Gesetzliche Vorgaben

On a staircase with at least three steps, a handrail is required. If the steps exceed a width of 1.5 meters, a handrail must be installed on both sides of the staircase. For a width of at least four meters, an intermediate handrail is mandatory, which is installed in the middle of the staircase.

In short:

  • Diameter 3 – 4.5 cm
  • Height 80 – 115 cmfrom 3 levels mandatory
Form either round or oval for public stairs.
  • From 1.5 meters step width, two handrails are mandatory.
  • 5 cm distance from the wall.
  • Step markings

Step markings

Stufenmarkierungen

A high-contrast design of the staircase and step markings for an accessible staircase.

The easiest way to make stair steps contrastive is by using step markings with the help of noticeable floor stripes. These are inexpensive and can be easily customized to fit any staircase by simple cutting. Retrofitting is therefore quickly feasible.

Important is that:

  • the markings are to be placed continuously on the steps
and represent a high contrast to the steps
  • Reflective or dazzling materials should be avoided (e.g. metal rails)
  • the stripes should be between 4 cm and 5 cm wide.

Adequate lighting

Adequate lighting

Adequate lighting conditions are important for an accessible staircase, whether during the day or at night. Lamps should be positioned in a way that no shadows are cast, and both landings and the entry and exit points of the stairs are well illuminated.

Light switches should be placed at a height of 85 cm so that all users can reach them.

An additional measure could be, for example, LED strips for the steps.

TOPRO Step stair climbing aid

TOPRO Step stair climbing aid

Without good support, climbing stairs can be both cumbersome and dangerous.

Do you need additional support when climbing stairs and wish for a barrier-free staircase?
Get to know the unique TOPRO Step stair walking aid, which provides more safety and support for those who have difficulty climbing stairs.

TOPRO Step is a stair walking aid that simplifies climbing stairs and provides more grip and safety. TOPRO Step offers you a firm and solid handle that moves along an innovative and patented railing system.

Application

As you can see in the video below, the TOPRO Step is moved down the stairs by lifting the outer part of the handle slightly. You can then push the stair aid an arm’s length in front of you. When pressure is applied to the handle, it automatically locks in place and secures you. When going up the stairs, the TOPRO Step is pushed up along the railing system. With each step you climb, you usually push the handle an arm’s length in front of you to create enough distance between you and the handle.
